New from the Study - Nuevo en el Estudio

After spending a totally unproductive Summer (art wise), about a month ago inspiration finally returned and I found myself spending more and more time at the studio working. The first couple of weeks were spent unpacking all the stuff I had packed away for the renovating (well, nearly everything, I still have a couple of boxes to go, sick of boxes…).  Then came that wonderful process that always follows a renovation, the stage where you can not find anything. I am still working on this and wondering each day what strange logical thinking method was I using when I took the stuff out of the boxes and put it away. Thankfully, I have found enough things to start working on some new designs.  What do you think?

Today we are enjoying a rather glorious sunny day (only use natural light for my photographs), so let’s see if I can finish the rest of the photos and you can soon see all the new designs on etsy.

Después de pasar un verano completamente improductivo en lo que se refiere a mi lado artístico, hará como cosa de un mes, recuperé la inspiración y empecé a pasar más tiempo en el estudio.  Las primeras semanas me dediqué a ordenar las cajas de la mini-reforma (todavía me quedan un par de ellas, estoy saturada ya de cajas!).  Luego llegó esa maravillosa etapa que sigue a cualquier reforma que se precie, y es el periodo de “no encuentro absolutamente nada”. Todavía me encuentro en medio de esta etapa en la que me pregunto a diario en que extraña lógica estaba pensando cuando saqué las cosas de las cajas y las guardé no se sabe dónde. Afortunadamente, he encontrado ya bastantes cosas, las suficientes para empezar a trabajar en los nuevos diseños. Qué os parecen?

Hoy hace un día bastante divino y soleado (para hacer mis fotos sólo utilizo luz natural), así que a ver si consigo terminar de fotografiar todo para subirlo a etsy y que pronto podáis ver mis nuevos diseños.

Pepper preserves - Pimientos del piquillo 

When I was little and we lived in Rioja (before moving to Australia), I remember my mum used to spend most of the Autumn months cooking, canning and preserving in the kitchen. She would make delicious fruit jam and pear and peach preserves, tomato sauce, salsa, peppers…  The thing is that La Rioja is so fertile, and fruit and vegetables are not only incredibly tasty but also, so abundant! ( Madrid has a great many wonderful things, but quality fruit and veggies are not one of them).

For instance, this weekend we were there for a family visit. On Saturday morning without getting up too early or making a huge effort we went walking and along the way picked mushrooms (boletus edilus, delicious!) and walnuts.  Once home we helped my sister pick tomatoes from her orchard.  We also got some red peppers from the local variety (piquillo), but these we bought from the local market.  Peppers are the only thing that we still make preserves with at home. It is quite a lengthy process as first you have to roast them, peel them, put them in cans and then boil the cans. It can also get quite messy (the pepper juice stains everything a horrid yellow colour). On the other hand, if you do it with a group of friends or with family like we did, it can be a lot of fun and you get to eat delicious peppers all year round!

Cuando yo era pequeña y vivíamos en La Rioja (antes de mudarnos a Australia), me acuerdo que mi madre se pasaba la mayor parte del Otoño metida en la cocina haciendo mermeladas y todo tipo de conservas (de fruta, de tomate, fritada, pimientos).  Y es que La Rioja es súper fértil y la fruta y la verdura, además de estar buenísima crece en gran abundancia! (Madrid tiene muchas cosas muy buenas, pero la fruta y la verdura no están entre ellas).

Por ejemplo, este fin de semana hemos estado allí visitando a la familia y sin darnos un gran madrugón ni una gran paliza, el sábado por la mañana dando un paseo cogimos setas (sobre todo boletus, riquísimas) y nueces.  Una vez en casa ayudamos a mi hermana a recolectar tomates cherry de su huerta.  También cogimos unos pimientos del piquillo (estos comprados) para embotarlos.  Los pimientos son de las pocas cosas que todavía preparamos en conserva.  Es verdad que el proceso es un poco largo porque hay que asarlos, pelarlos, embotarlos, cocer los botes… y además es un proceso un tanto “guarrete” porque el juguito de los pimientos tiñe todo de un color amarillento asquerosito, pero, si lo haces con un grupo de amigos o con tu familia como lo hicimos nosotros puede ser muy divertido y además, te llevas unos botes de pimientos deliciosos a casa al finalizar el día!

You may not remember this as it happened a long, long time ago (back in May in fact), we were renovating the attic which is were my studio is and I was looking at other artists’ studios for inspiration. The renovating, albeit a very small one, took forever, which means that I had plenty of time to look (and drool over) other people’s work spaces.

One day I came upon the work of the very talented photographer Jennifer Causey and her “The Makers” project, a series of gorgeous photos depicting artists at work in their studios.  Most of these artists are New York based and all of the studios are amazing, but there is one, that for me, stood out from the rest, and that is the work space of the Florist Amy Merrick. Wow. All I could think of was I want that studio (I still do, in fact, I wouldn’t mind living in it), and then, I want to be a florist! (this last wish was soon forgotten as I have no talent with flowers whatsoever).

The pictures of Amy’s studio and work were so amazing that I googled her to find out more about her work, I found her blog and read it all in one go! That was a lot of reading  (the blog starts in 2007!) but for me it was totally worth it as it is one of the most beautiful and inspirational blogs that I had ever read.  Lately she has not been posting very often but she is very active in Instagram and each of her photos is a real treat.

Igual no os acordais de esto ya que hace mucho, mucho tiempo (nos tenemos que remontar a Mayo). Estábamos de mini reforma en el ático, que es dónde está mi estudio, y yo me dedicaba a mirar estudios de otros artistas para inspirarme y dejar el mío bonito.  Aunque nuestra reforma consistía en pintar, muebles nuevos y poco más, por esas cosas en el mundo-reforma se hizo eterna, con lo cual tuve mucho tiempo para mirar (y babear) con los estudios de otros artistas.

Un día me topé con el trabajo de una fotógrafa alucinante, Jennifer Causey y su proyecto “The Makers”, una serie de fotos increíbles de varios artistas trabajando en sus estudios.  La mayor parte de los artistas trabajan desde Nueva York y merece la pena verlos todos, pero hay uno en especial que me dejó prendadita, y es el estudio de la Florista Amy Merrick.  Wow.  Nada más verlo pensé… quiero ese estudio! (todavía lo quiero, incluso me mudaría a vivir en el), y luego pensé ya no quiero hacer más pendientes, ahora quiero ser florista! Pero eso me duró poco porque las flores se me dan fatal.

Las fotos del estudio de Amy y de su trabajo eran tan alucinantes que decidí “googlearla” para ver más cositas y encontré su blog, el cual me leí del tirón.  Mucha lectura ya que el blog empezó en el 2007, pero oh-tan-maravilloso! Creo que es de los blogs más bonitos e inspiradores que he leído jamás.  Últimamente no lo tiene muy actualizado, pero es muy activa en Instagram y todas sus fotos son una delicia.

Hello Fall - Hola Otoño

Good Heavens! How time flies!!! September has passed, Fall is here and vacations seem so far, far away. I did not really mean to take such a long blog vacation but this year, for some reason I was feeling really tired and needed time to do nothing, as strange as that may sound…

It’s funny about the Seasons here in Madrid, one moment (that is, a mere three days ago), we are still in Summer mode, swimming at the pool and drinking gazpacho and the next day I find myself cooking stews and wondering where on earth did I put all the woolly blankets! I am not really ready for fall yet…

Summer this year has been wonderful, first we went for our family vacation to Galicia , in the North of Spain.  The weather there is perfect, not too hot which is something one really appreciates after the scorching heat of Madrid . Everything is lush and green, and the food is so good!  Too good in fact, by the time we left my jeans were beginning to feel a bit too tight (sad but true).  The children also love it there. They spend most of their days at the beach playing with their friends and cousins, swimming, building sand castles, pretty much the same stuff I did when I was a kid.  I guess some things never change.

Then we went to Rioja, which is my home region. We spent two weeks there in the tiny village where my family originally comes from (in Winter it roughly has 50 inhabitants, so yes, it is pretty tiny). We swapped the coast for the hills and we had so much fun! We climbed mountains, we swam in rivers (well actually, I just watched my kids doing it, the water was really way, way too cold!), we picked all sorts of berries, I discovered I do not really like blackberries which my children loved as they got to eat mine as well as theirs, I spent time with my wonderful family and missed my sister Araceli terribly, read books, fell in love once again with the local cuisine and put on even more weight (long live “aperitivos”!), I could really go on forever!

Cielos! Como pasa el tiempo!! Septiembre ya se ha ido y las vacaciones, tanto las blog vacaciones como las de verdad se ven como muy, muy lejanas.  No era mi intención tomarme un descanso del blog este año, pero por alguna razón, este año estaba muuy cansada y aunque pueda parecer una contradicción, realmente necesitaba el tiempo para no hacer nada.

Las estaciones en Madrid son muy raras, un día te estás bañando en la piscina y tomando gazpacho (esto es hace tres días) y al siguiente estás preparando unas lentejitas y preguntándote dónde demonios guardaste las mantitas de lana del sofá. Buf, realmente no estoy lista para el otoño, y mucho menos para el invierno!

El verano este año ha sido estupendo, primero nos fuimos a  Galicia, en el Norte de España. El clima allí es perfecto, no excesivamente caluroso, lo cual se agradece después del calorazo asfixiante de Madrid. Todo está verde y jugoso, y la comida es tan buena! Demasiado buena, para cuando nos marchamos mis vaqueros ya me quedaban prietos, prietos (si, una injusticia, pero comer en exceso es lo que tiene).  A los niños también les encanta. Se pasan la mayor parte del día jugando en la playa con sus amigos y sus primos, nadando, haciendo castillos de arena, realmente haciendo más o menos lo mismo que hacía yo de pequeña.

Luego nos fuimos a la Rioja , que es de dónde yo soy. Pasamos dos semanas en el pueblecito de dónde procede mi familia, cambiamos el mar por la sierra y lo pasamos genial!  Hemos subido montañas, nos hemos bañado en ríos (bueno, en realidad yo he visto a mis hijos bañarse en ríos, el agua de esos riachuelos viene directamente del deshielo y no sabéis lo fría que está), hemos cogido moras, he descubierto que las moras realmente no me gustan tanto, he pasado tiempo con mi maravillosa familia, he echado de menos a mi hermana Araceli, he leído libros, me he vuelto a enamorar de la comida local y como siempre, he vuelto más gordita (pero que vivan los aperitivos!).

Bueno, y que tal, habéis pasado un buen verano? Os parece ya tan lejano como el mío?

Tenéis muchos excitantes y maravillosos proyectos para el otoño?

Inspiration for my stand at Molly Market - La inspiración para mi puesto en el Molly Market

No se si es porque  paso mucho tiempo en la Facultad de Bellas Artes pero ultimamente me entran unas ganas locas de pintar, dibujar y sacar los carboncillos.

Yo no tengo un logo propiamente dicho, en las ferias y en este blog, lo que utilizo como logo es mi nombre escrito con la tipografía "Jane Austen", y es que Miss Austen, además de escribir unas novelas preciosas, también tenía una letra muy molona.  Mi cartel en los puestos de las ferias normalmente lo imprimo directamente en el ordenador, pero esta vez,  decidí hacerlo yo misma.  Saqué la caja de de tintas y plumillas de mi padre y de mis hermanas que, graciosamente, me han cedido mientras me dure esta fase creativa y me puse manos a la obra.  Qué os parece? Aunque es claramente mejorable, a mi me encanta-  Además, he descubierto otro "vicio" más, la caligrafía! Es súper relajante.

I am not sure if it is because lately I spend a lot of time at the Fine Arts Faculty, but at present all I can think of is of painting and drawing!  So, for the latest art fair, instead of just printing my name with the Jane Austen font which is what I usually do (Jane Austen apart from writing beautiful novels also had an awesome handwriting which the Jane Austen font reproduces) I decided to write it myself using quills and ink. What do you think? Although there is obvious room for improvement, I rather like it! and I have also discovered yet another "obsession" to add to my current list of obsessions, calligraphy!

Una recomendación, si también os "enganchais" a este vicio, comprar tintas, pinceles y plumillas de calidad. No sólo quedan mejor si no que además duran eternamente.  Las que yo utilicé eran de mi padre que siempre nos insistía en que el material de arte tenía que ser de primera calidad.   Las tintas tienen más de 10 años y siguen perfectas y los pinceles... yo ahora con los niños que estropean todo los compro muy corrientitos y al utilizar los de mi padre me di cuenta otra vez de que realmente no hay color.

Just a little thing, if you too are thinking about developing a "calligraphy obsession", make sure you buy inks and quills of good quality.  The ones I used belonged to my father who always insisted that art material had to be of the best quality, the inks are over 10 years old and they are still in perfect condition.  

Aquí podéis ver como quedó mi puesto.  Mi inspiración para este mercadillo tanto para los diseños como para el puesto en si, fueron los cuentos de hadas, los bosques encantados  y los bailes en palacio,  vamos, el mundo princesil, todo muy romántico y etéreo. La manzana roja es un guiño a las madrastras malvadas que no pueden faltar de los cuentos....

This is how my stand looked.  My inspiration for this art fair, both for the designs and for my booth, were fairy tales, enchanted forests and a palace ball, the stuff princesses are made of, very ethereal and romantic things.  The red apple was kind of a tribute to the evil step-mothers that always appear on those tales.

Quiche aux courgettes et au chèvre

Como habréis detectado por el título del post, esta semana seguimos con temática Parisina.

Courgette, que bonita palabra, verdad? Es calabacín en Francés, pero mientras courgette suena a "oh la là",  calabacín suena a, bueno, a calabacín, y esto lo digo con todo mi cariño ya que adoro el calabacín.

Bueno, durante el viaje a París comí este quiche de calabacín y queso de cabra dos veces, y no lo tomé en cada comida porque no me fue posible.   Era como comer un trozo de cielo en cada bocado, que ríquísimo!  Total, que a la vuelta fue mi aniversario de boda y decidí sorprender al esposo con una cena rica.  Busqué en internet y encontré esta receta que me pareció la más parecida al quiche

 que yo había comido.  Sólo le he hecho dos modificaciones, en vez de 3 calabacines yo sólo le puse uno y luego le añadí un tomate natural a rodajas porque los quiches Parisinos lo llevaban y le daban un sabor muy rico.  El resultado final? Èxito rotundo, al esposo también le encantó y lo mejor es que es facilísimo de hacer.

As you have probably guessed from the post`s title, this week I am still in a Parisian state of mind.

Courgette, what a beautiful word, isn´t it?  It's French for Zucchini, but whilst courgette sounds very "oh la là" zucchini sounds like, zucchini, and I say this with all my respects as I love zucchinis.

Well, during my Paris trip I had this zucchini and goat's cheese quiche twice, and I did not have it for each meal because it was not possible. It was delicious! like eating a piece of heaven in each bite.  So, upon my return, it was my wedding anniversary and I decided to surprise my husband with a yummy dinner.  I searched the internet and found this recipe which seemed the closest thing to the quiche I had eaten. I have only introduced a couple of changes, first I only used a zucchini instead of three, and second, I added a sliced natural tomato, the Parisian quiches had them and they added a lovely flavour.  The end result? A huge success, my husband loved it too and the best part, it was so easy to make!!

Paris

Se me acumula el trabajo.  No me puedo creer que hace casi un mes que no escribo! Pero es que Junio se me ha pasado volando, han pasado tantas cosas!  El Molly Market, las fiestas de fin de curso de mis hijos, visitas, y mi viaje a Paris.  Hacía años y años que no iba y se me había olvidado lo precioso que es. He venido con mil ideas para mi casa, mi cocina y mi estudio. Ojalá pudiera hacer un viaje cada semana! Pero como no puedo, miraré estas fotos para recordarlo.  Espero que os gusten.

I am so behind on my posts. I can not believe that I have not written any in nearly a month!  The month of June has passed by so quickly, must be due to the amount of things I have done. The Molly Market, my kids end of school year performances, visitors and my trip to Paris.  I had not been back in years and I had nearly forgotten just how absolutely gorgeous it is.  I have returned with a thousand ideas for my home, the kitch and my studio.  How I wish I could travel every week!  But seeing how I can't, I will jus look at the photos to remember it all. I hope you like them.
