A few days ago we made sloe liquor at home.  Now, before you conjure up in your head images of me wearing a frilly apron “Anne of Greengables style” loitering over bubbling pots and pans, let me tell you that this is not the case. Making sloe liquor is super-easy, actually, the hardest and most difficult thing is finding the sloes!

Sloes are the fruit of the Blackthorn bush (Prunus Spinosa, love Latin names, don´t you?), they are quite tiny and have the most beautiful blue/purple colour. They also taste, well, gross, very astringent, it also feels as if you have been eating sand paper instead of a berry.  My theory is that at some point in history, someone decided that such a beautiful berry had to be good for something and so, they decided to make  liquor with them which, by the way, is really quite good.

I used to go sloe picking with my grandmother in the village, she was also the one who taught me how to make it and here is her recipe:

-         Get a big bottle with a wide neck

-         Fill it up one third with the sloes

-         Fill the rest of the bottle with aniseed cream

-         Close the bottle and store it in a cool dark place for a year (the garage for me).

-         One year later, sieve it and put it in a nice glass bottle (the nice bottle is optional, I just like pretty bottles).

-         Told you it was easy!!

Hace unos días hicimos pacharán en casa. Antes de que me visualicéis trabajando como una loca en la cocina, simplemente quiero aclarar que hacer pacharán es de las cosas más fáciles del mundo. De hecho, lo más complicado y laborioso que tiene todo el proceso es encontrar las endrinas.

Por si no lo sabéis, el pacharán se hace con endrinas, que son los frutos del endrino (Prunus Spinosa, me chiflan los nombres en Latín, y a vosotros?). Son muy pequeñitas y tienen un color preciosísimo, entre azul y morado.  También tienen un sabor que sólo se puede describir como asquerosito, aspero, aspero, si te comes una luego tienes la sensación de que lo que has comido es papel de lija.  Mi teoría es, que en algún momento de la historia una persona tuvo la corazonada de que algo tan bonito tenía que tener una utilidad y probaron a hacer licor con el, con bastante éxito por cierto porque está bien rico.

Yo de niña iba a coger endrinas con mi abuela en el pueblo, también fue ella la que me enseñó a hacerlo y me dio la receta, que es esta:

-         Necesitas una botella grande con el cuello ancho para que te quepan las endrinas.

-         Llenas un tercio de la botella con endrinas.

-         El resto de la botella de rellenas con crema de anís.

-         Lo dejas reposar durante un año en un lugar seco y oscuro (yo lo dejo en el garaje).

-         Al cavo del año lo cuelas y lo pones en una botella bonita de cristal (lo de la botella bonita es opcional pero siempre queda mejor)

-         Os dije que era fácil!!

New from the Study - Nuevo en el Estudio

After spending a totally unproductive Summer (art wise), about a month ago inspiration finally returned and I found myself spending more and more time at the studio working. The first couple of weeks were spent unpacking all the stuff I had packed away for the renovating (well, nearly everything, I still have a couple of boxes to go, sick of boxes…).  Then came that wonderful process that always follows a renovation, the stage where you can not find anything. I am still working on this and wondering each day what strange logical thinking method was I using when I took the stuff out of the boxes and put it away. Thankfully, I have found enough things to start working on some new designs.  What do you think?

Today we are enjoying a rather glorious sunny day (only use natural light for my photographs), so let’s see if I can finish the rest of the photos and you can soon see all the new designs on etsy.

Después de pasar un verano completamente improductivo en lo que se refiere a mi lado artístico, hará como cosa de un mes, recuperé la inspiración y empecé a pasar más tiempo en el estudio.  Las primeras semanas me dediqué a ordenar las cajas de la mini-reforma (todavía me quedan un par de ellas, estoy saturada ya de cajas!).  Luego llegó esa maravillosa etapa que sigue a cualquier reforma que se precie, y es el periodo de “no encuentro absolutamente nada”. Todavía me encuentro en medio de esta etapa en la que me pregunto a diario en que extraña lógica estaba pensando cuando saqué las cosas de las cajas y las guardé no se sabe dónde. Afortunadamente, he encontrado ya bastantes cosas, las suficientes para empezar a trabajar en los nuevos diseños. Qué os parecen?

Hoy hace un día bastante divino y soleado (para hacer mis fotos sólo utilizo luz natural), así que a ver si consigo terminar de fotografiar todo para subirlo a etsy y que pronto podáis ver mis nuevos diseños.

Inspiration for my stand at Molly Market - La inspiración para mi puesto en el Molly Market

No se si es porque  paso mucho tiempo en la Facultad de Bellas Artes pero ultimamente me entran unas ganas locas de pintar, dibujar y sacar los carboncillos.

Yo no tengo un logo propiamente dicho, en las ferias y en este blog, lo que utilizo como logo es mi nombre escrito con la tipografía "Jane Austen", y es que Miss Austen, además de escribir unas novelas preciosas, también tenía una letra muy molona.  Mi cartel en los puestos de las ferias normalmente lo imprimo directamente en el ordenador, pero esta vez,  decidí hacerlo yo misma.  Saqué la caja de de tintas y plumillas de mi padre y de mis hermanas que, graciosamente, me han cedido mientras me dure esta fase creativa y me puse manos a la obra.  Qué os parece? Aunque es claramente mejorable, a mi me encanta-  Además, he descubierto otro "vicio" más, la caligrafía! Es súper relajante.

I am not sure if it is because lately I spend a lot of time at the Fine Arts Faculty, but at present all I can think of is of painting and drawing!  So, for the latest art fair, instead of just printing my name with the Jane Austen font which is what I usually do (Jane Austen apart from writing beautiful novels also had an awesome handwriting which the Jane Austen font reproduces) I decided to write it myself using quills and ink. What do you think? Although there is obvious room for improvement, I rather like it! and I have also discovered yet another "obsession" to add to my current list of obsessions, calligraphy!

Una recomendación, si también os "enganchais" a este vicio, comprar tintas, pinceles y plumillas de calidad. No sólo quedan mejor si no que además duran eternamente.  Las que yo utilicé eran de mi padre que siempre nos insistía en que el material de arte tenía que ser de primera calidad.   Las tintas tienen más de 10 años y siguen perfectas y los pinceles... yo ahora con los niños que estropean todo los compro muy corrientitos y al utilizar los de mi padre me di cuenta otra vez de que realmente no hay color.

Just a little thing, if you too are thinking about developing a "calligraphy obsession", make sure you buy inks and quills of good quality.  The ones I used belonged to my father who always insisted that art material had to be of the best quality, the inks are over 10 years old and they are still in perfect condition.  

Aquí podéis ver como quedó mi puesto.  Mi inspiración para este mercadillo tanto para los diseños como para el puesto en si, fueron los cuentos de hadas, los bosques encantados  y los bailes en palacio,  vamos, el mundo princesil, todo muy romántico y etéreo. La manzana roja es un guiño a las madrastras malvadas que no pueden faltar de los cuentos....

This is how my stand looked.  My inspiration for this art fair, both for the designs and for my booth, were fairy tales, enchanted forests and a palace ball, the stuff princesses are made of, very ethereal and romantic things.  The red apple was kind of a tribute to the evil step-mothers that always appear on those tales.

The Princess Bride - La Princesa Prometida

Una de mis pelis favoritas cumple 25 años, 25! Madre mía, como pasa el tiempo!  Se trata de La Princesa Prometida, esa que nos ha dejado tantas frases célebres como "Inconcebible", "Como desees" y la más famosa de todas "Hola, mi nombre es Iñigo Montoya, mataste a mi padre, prepárate a morir".  La película dirigida en 1987 por Rob Reiner, que también ha dirigido otra de mis pelis favoritas, "Cuando Harry Encontró a Sally".

One of my favorite films has turned 25, 25! Good gracious, how time flies!  I am talking about the Princess Bride, which has left us with many memorable quotes such as, "Unconceivable", "As you wish" and everyone's favorite "Hello, my name is Iñigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die". The film was directed in 1987 by Rob Reiner who also happens to have directed another of my favorite films, "When Harry Met Sally".

Para celebrarlo, Entertainment Weekly juntó a todos los actores de la peli incluyendo sendas visitas del "más allá" (fijaros en las fotos de André el Gigante y de Peter Falk).  La foto me parece alucinante,  es obra de Art Streiber, fotógrafo famoso por sus obras corales.  Se tardó más de dos días en hacer la foto en si y como dato anecdótico, señalar que Billy Crystal llevaba el gorro de Elfo original de la peli, se ve que le gustaba y se lo quedó.

Además de los diálogos que son muy divertidos, la música que es deliciosa o incluso las escenas de esgrima que son alucinantes esta película tiene algo especial.  No conozco a nadie a la que no le haya gustado, es más, a todo el mundo que le he enseñado esta foto hoy se le ha puesto una cara de felicidad absoluta al ver que se trataba de los integrantes de la Princesa Prometida y todos tenían una escena favorita de la peli (la mía la escena de la boda con el cura gangoso...)  Igual alguien debería estudiar el inusual poder de esta película como anti-depresivo general y fórmula para levantar el ánimo de manera inmediata!

To celebrate it, Entertainment Weekly organized a cast reunion, including cast members who are no longer with us (note the photos of André the Giant and Peter Falk).  I think the photo is quite amazing, it was taken by Art Streiber, who is famous for his group photos.  Setting up and taking the actual photo took two days.  By the way, see Billy Crystal's cap? It's the one he wore in his Elf costume during the film.  It seems he liked it and decided to keep it.

Apart from the film's dialogues which are very funny, the lovely music or even the fencing scenes which are pretty awesome, this film has something special.  I do not know anyone who does not like it.  Even more, everyone to whom I showed this photo today started smiling the moment they realized it was the cast of the Princess Bride and they all had a favorite scene (mine is the wedding scene where the priest talks about "Mawage, that bwessed awangement… “  Who knows, maybe someone should study the unusual  power of this film as an anti-depressant and source of instant happiness!
