Marilyn Reading - Marilyn Leyendo

El otro día me quedé hasta las mil viendo capítulos de "Smash", por si no la conocéis (que seguramente es así ya que, por lo que yo sé, sólo la vemos mi vecina y yo) es una serie que cuenta como se monta un musical en Broadway.  A mi me parece buenísima, las canciones son deliciosas y los actores son geniales (Angelica Houston en su papel de productora está total!). 

The other day I stayed up until late watching Smash episodes.  If you've never heard about it (if you live in Spain you probably haven't, I think that only my next door neighbor and I watch it here), it's a series that revolves around the  creation of a musical on Broadway.  I think it's wonderful, the songs are lovely and the actors are great (I specially like Angelica Houston in the part of the producer!)

El musical que se supone están montando en la serie es sobre la vida de Marilyn Monroe, así que hay mil alusiones a Marilyn en la serie.  Se mencionan mucho sus gustos, su ropa, como hablaba, como se movía... en uno de los capítulos del otro día, el director y una de las aspirantes a estrella estaban hablando sobre Marilyn y sus miedos y el director le decía que una de las cosas que Marilyn más temía en el mundo es que no la tomaran en serio.

The musical they are producing in the series is based on the life of Marilyn Monroe, so she is very much present all through the show.  The actors talk about what she liked, her clothes, the way she moved... on one of the chapters I watched the other day, the director and one of the would be stars were talking about Marilyn's fears and the director mentions that one of the things Marilyn feared most in life was that people would not take her seriously.

Esa frase me recordó a un artículo que leí hace unos meses, creo que fue en el Vanity Fair, en el que decían que a Marilyn Monroe le gustaba que le hicieran fotos en las que salía leyendo.  Una manera de demostrar al mundo que era algo más que una cara bonita?  No lo se, el caso es que he puesto "Marilyn Leyendo" en google y me han salido un montón de imágenes.  Estas son sólo una muestra.

That reminded me of an article I read a few months ago, I think it was in Vanity Fair, in which the writer said that Marilyn liked having pictures taken of herself reading.   Was it perhaps a way to show the rest of the world that she was more than just a pretty face?  I don't know, but the thing is that I have googled "Marilyn reading" and I have found a heck of a lot of photos. These are just a small sample.

Anna Karenina

En general no me gustan los dramones ni las películas/novelas que terminan mal quitando contadas excepciones, y una de ellas es Anna Karenina, la más famosa y según muchos, mejor novela de Leo Tolstoy.

 En el mundo del celuloide también la encuentran bastante fascinante ya que vamos por la cuarta versión cinematográfica.

In general, I do not like dramas or novels/films that do not have a happy ending although I am willing to make an exception with Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy’s most famous and arguably best novel.

It seems that in the movie world they find it equally fascinating as the fourth remake of the novel has just been released.

 

La primera Anna fue Greta Garbo, espectacular con este conjunto de pieles.

La tercera Anna fue Sophie Marceau en la versión de 1997. Preciosa ella,  preciosa toda la película.

Keira Knightley, la cuarta y, de momento, última Anna Karenina. Todavía no he visto esta película, pero seguro que es excelente.  Además, Keira Knightley parece hecha para papeles en películas de época, verdad?

Keira Knightley is the fourth, and so far, last Anna Karenina.  I still have not seen this film but from what I have heard it too is a beautiful film.  Also, Keira Knightley seems to be made for history films doesn’t she?

Inspirada por la moda y la opulencia del XIX he diseñado unos pendientes dorados con una lágrima de ágata verde, muy favorecedores y ligeros, para poder llevarlos desde por la mañana hasta por la noche.

 Inspired by the fashion and opulence of the 19^th Century I have designed this pair of golden earrings adorned with a tear- shaped green agate.  They are very becoming and amazingly light, the kind of earrings you can wear all day long and into the evening.

The Princess Bride - La Princesa Prometida

Una de mis pelis favoritas cumple 25 años, 25! Madre mía, como pasa el tiempo!  Se trata de La Princesa Prometida, esa que nos ha dejado tantas frases célebres como "Inconcebible", "Como desees" y la más famosa de todas "Hola, mi nombre es Iñigo Montoya, mataste a mi padre, prepárate a morir".  La película dirigida en 1987 por Rob Reiner, que también ha dirigido otra de mis pelis favoritas, "Cuando Harry Encontró a Sally".

One of my favorite films has turned 25, 25! Good gracious, how time flies!  I am talking about the Princess Bride, which has left us with many memorable quotes such as, "Unconceivable", "As you wish" and everyone's favorite "Hello, my name is Iñigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die". The film was directed in 1987 by Rob Reiner who also happens to have directed another of my favorite films, "When Harry Met Sally".

Para celebrarlo, Entertainment Weekly juntó a todos los actores de la peli incluyendo sendas visitas del "más allá" (fijaros en las fotos de André el Gigante y de Peter Falk).  La foto me parece alucinante,  es obra de Art Streiber, fotógrafo famoso por sus obras corales.  Se tardó más de dos días en hacer la foto en si y como dato anecdótico, señalar que Billy Crystal llevaba el gorro de Elfo original de la peli, se ve que le gustaba y se lo quedó.

Además de los diálogos que son muy divertidos, la música que es deliciosa o incluso las escenas de esgrima que son alucinantes esta película tiene algo especial.  No conozco a nadie a la que no le haya gustado, es más, a todo el mundo que le he enseñado esta foto hoy se le ha puesto una cara de felicidad absoluta al ver que se trataba de los integrantes de la Princesa Prometida y todos tenían una escena favorita de la peli (la mía la escena de la boda con el cura gangoso...)  Igual alguien debería estudiar el inusual poder de esta película como anti-depresivo general y fórmula para levantar el ánimo de manera inmediata!

To celebrate it, Entertainment Weekly organized a cast reunion, including cast members who are no longer with us (note the photos of André the Giant and Peter Falk).  I think the photo is quite amazing, it was taken by Art Streiber, who is famous for his group photos.  Setting up and taking the actual photo took two days.  By the way, see Billy Crystal's cap? It's the one he wore in his Elf costume during the film.  It seems he liked it and decided to keep it.

Apart from the film's dialogues which are very funny, the lovely music or even the fencing scenes which are pretty awesome, this film has something special.  I do not know anyone who does not like it.  Even more, everyone to whom I showed this photo today started smiling the moment they realized it was the cast of the Princess Bride and they all had a favorite scene (mine is the wedding scene where the priest talks about "Mawage, that bwessed awangement… “  Who knows, maybe someone should study the unusual  power of this film as an anti-depressant and source of instant happiness!
